It was a tradition in the rural American south. A town's prettiest "belles" would raise funds for charity by letting local boys bid for dates with them. But there was a twist. THE BABES ALL STOOD BEHIND A CURTAIN SO THAT ALL THE BOYS WERE ALLOWED TO SEE OF THE BABES THEY BID ON WERE A ROW OF TOES. HENCE, "THE TOE AUCTION."
